In Memory of Judith Rose Hutter

Our beautiful Judith passed away peacefully on November 23, 2022 in Desert Hot Springs, California. Judy stated her goal was for “a dignified ending and peaceful”, and she did just that! She is resting in Heaven with her wonderful mother and father and family members who departed before her. She is reunited with the love of her life Ronald ‘Duke’ Yankovich; all are awaiting to receive us.

Blessed Are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. – Matthew 5:4

Judith Rose Hutter was the daughter of Rosa ‘Rosie’ Koral Hutter and Albert Franklin Hutter. She was a native of Orange County, California.  She was an honored Girl Scout. She graduated from Newport Harbor High School, Newport Beach, California and was raised in Costa Mesa, California.

As a young child Judy was raised with her cousins Roz, Diane, Penny, and Karla in Santa Ana, California as their fathers were serving in WWII overseas. Judy and her brother Jack lived an active childhood of adventure with their parents; hunting, camping, fishing and hiking. They shared a mutual love for backyard archaeology and created wonderful yard art that would rival Knott’s Berry Farm!

Judith Hutter is a Southern California treasure.  She was a beautiful vivacious model for Volkswagen and Porsche.  She could pull off her good looks from ‘deep red head to a beautiful blonde’ haired Slavic muse. Judith travelled the world and lived her life by her terms and was a true free spirit; our wonderful Bohemian!

She owned ‘Macho’ a men’s hair salon in Laguna Beach, California. Judy was one of many of those in the hair industry that was tutored or mentored under Sebring International, by Jay Sebring himself. She was a lifelong barber and involved in real estate.

‘Serious as a Heart Attack!’

Her Czechoslovakian and German DNA wove through her business accolades of beauty and class. Judy was in the right place and the right time when Southern California was filled with beautiful people. She was onto something as a female barber before it was cool. Way ahead of our times, she crossed the stars, the moon and our hearts forever.

Judy was a formidable spirit, determined and true. She never said anything bad about anyone. She was private about her family and held her cards close.  She overcame her struggles with pluck and dare. She was a force to be reckoned with and loved a fun time with family and friends which usually had music, booze and Mexican food, but don’t forget the laughter!  Judy was a poet and we know it.

“I Don’t Want to Hear it”

Judy loved country western music and jazz.  She would recite her poetry as a timeless orator with a sweeping hand and a meaningful pause, then a look from her eye to yours to make her exact point, and strongly leap to the next sentence in a sensual and affirmed cadence. We all believed in her.

When we would gather on the phone she commanded an audience; or in person she would strike her classic pose for photos, must have lipstick and her beautiful hair coiffed perfectly so. Accented by her expressive clothing that became her iconic presence of elegance. You knew you were in front of a grand energy that was unstoppable and loveable and she called the shots. She lived life her way.

I did it my way’.

She adored her babies; her cat Ziggy from her friend Leah and her doggy MooMoo from her cousin Diana.  She donated to animal care charities and veteran causes that were so dear to her soul. Judy had a great sense of humor.  You probably are a recipient of some of her colorful cards, and there is nothing you could do about that! (Haha!). She toasted the heavens and loved those dear to her heart.  You were will never forget her one liners!

My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.

      2 Corinthians 12:9

Judy reunited in Christ towards the end of her amazing life and appreciated prayers extended her way.  She said ‘You know I’m a Christian, right?”.  She reconciled spiritually at the end of her long life and is an spiritual inspiration towards a well lived and recovered life.

‘Get Out of Here!’

Judith is survived by her brother Albert Jack Hutter and sister-in-law Alice G. Hutter of Orange County, California, her nephew Scott and his wife Len, niece Anna and her husband Michael and their children (8 beautiful children all together); and her cousins Rosalind W., Penny H., Koral G., Joel G., Rodney K., Byron Q., Shawn A., Kara A., and her significant other Henry Otto Detjen Jr.

Don’t be BORING!

Macho in Laguna Beach.

Judy Hutter's storefront was on Pacific Coast Hwy in Laguna Beach California. Macho's had the trends of the times, remember the macrame from the 1970s?

Judy lined the windows and walls, plant hangers with handmade macrame designs.

You could see from the front window and often you would see Judy's doggy 'POTSIE' on the front steps or one of the lovely barbers of Macho striking a pose!

The Era of Jay Sebring

Judy was one of many of those in the hair industry that was tutored or mentored under Sebring International.  Jay Sebring changed the barber aspect in the USA and modernized the attitude about hair. He introduced hair management tools from Europe and inserted a trend that fit right in with the Cocaine generation. Hair got more buoyant, fluffy and defined!

Judy took these principles of hair salon operations and after working in Salons, she branched off on her own and Macho, a men's hair salon was born in Laguna Beach, California.

Those truly were the days.

Barbers United

Judy said this was a well known hairdresser in China Town.  He is quite stylish in his 70 threads, remember polyester?. It's the 70's.

Judy Hutter is striking a pose with him.  This was the post Jay Sebring era of hair salons.

Judith the Barber

Macho, a Men's Hair Salon
Proprietor Judy Hutter

Judy loved her work so much. She was one of our bright stars. Her family adored her and she had some great friends and colleagues.

She had a great idea she put into motion, she would open a mens hair salon, train only female barbers under her personal style and they would be set apart in a barber zone that relied mainly on clippers.

Out came the shears!

Judith, the Men's Barber of Choice

Judith Hutter is a Southern California treasure.  She was a model, from blonde to deep red head, a beautiful blonde haired Slavic muse, her DNA wove through her business accolades and she was in the right place and the right time when Southern California was filled with beautiful people.

She studied under Vidal Sasson working the seductive curls and twirls of the human perception of identity, hair being a defining movement.  Remember the movie 'Hair'? 1979 HAIR.

Judy set the trend, she stepped into an arena that was the opposite of hair salons for women. She decided to take the women to the barber pole, scissors in hand and work the curls and hairlines of our menfolk. These ladies were trained by Judy, they hustled and business was good.

Judy was onto something. Way ahead of our times, she crossed the stars.

In the 1970's & 1980's it was all about hair.  Hairspray was reserved for the 1960's.  Bigger hair, lots of hair,

There was always a time for a short buzz cut   Let The Sunshine In

We sure have been through a lot of shit haven't we since then?  We are still here. Macho lives.
Macho lives in the spirit of enthusiasm, our vibrant opportunities and the connections we made.
We thrived and kicked ass and have our memories to fuel our future.

Judy is my cousin. I've known her for all 61 years of my life. I made it this far. She made it further. She matters most.  I hope you enjoy this blog dedicated to our Judy of her life and times and those she held hands with along the way.

We are still kicking ass.
Stay tuned....

Judy Hutter, Macho Men's Salon and a great story about Laguna Beach Barbers

Photos courtesy of A Little Off The Top

Back in 2012, a great story came out in the Laguna Beach Independent, titled 'A LITTLE OFF THE TOP'.

A great article written by Andy Hedden regarding the experience of a great Barber through the eyes of a local client.

Judy Hutter of Macho, men's hair salon in Laguna Beach is featured in one of the authors historical images. Historical because as time goes so do the memories, shops turn over, barbers move on and new industry arrives.

Laguna Beach was Laguna back in the 1970's, it was where the beautiful people went.

Check out the link under the photo and enjoy Andy's story. Check it out!

The Original Macho Man

Judith Hutter, Proprietor and Barber was a trailbrazer before trailblazers were blazing. Her younger brother Jack is her longest Macho client. Back in the early 1970's Judy established the hottest Barbershop on the North American Continent 'Macho's, a men's hair salon in Laguna Beach California on Pacific Coast Highway 1.

She and her brother grew up in Costa Mesa, California and were Orange County brats. They were outgoing, pursued life with vigor and panache and all along the way Judy clenched her Filipino shears.

Jack still gets his hair settled down by his big sister Judy. In 2022, Judy has been working on men's hair for over 5 decades.

Jack still looks the same. No, he did not dye his hair, and he never lost any to boot!
